Qualifying marks and PRs highlight Stanford Invitational
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Multiple regional qualifying finishes and personal records highlighted competition at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Cobb Track and Angell Field.
“This was probably one of the better meets in BYU history,” head coach Ed Eyestone said. “There was awesomeness abounding on all fronts here in Palo Alto. I think the men came away with about a dozen regional qualifiers which surpassed our expectations. On the women’s side, I think they achieved about that many as well so we’re feeling really good here.”
Matt Owens finished second in the 3k steeplechase with a time of 8:39.41. This is currently the second fastest time in the country and he beat his previous personal record by about 30 seconds. It also earned him the No. 10 mark on the BYU all-time performers list. This was Owens’ first time competing in BYU uniform.
Daniel Carney earned a PR with his third place finish in the 3k steeplechase (8:42.17). Jacob Heslington followed close behind in fifth at 8:43.41. They both earned strong regional marks. Alex Hedquist finished fifth in an earlier heat and most likely earned a qualifying regional mark as well (8:59.41).
Garrett Marsing finished first in the 3k steeplechase at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival with a time of 8:58.55. This will most likely earn him a qualifying mark as well.
Clayton Young had a No. 4 all-time BYU finish in the 10000m which earned him a qualifying mark (28:27.48). Dallin Farnsworth returned to the track for the first time in two years due to multiple injuries. He earned a qualifying mark in the 10000m with his time of 29:17.84.
Abraham Alvarado finished with the No. 7 all-time BYU record and a qualifying mark in the 1500m race (3:41.17).
Ashleigh Warner finished first in the 5000m with a time of 16:06.90 to secure No. 9 all-time in BYU history. Warner typically competes in middle-distance races so this was her debut in the 5000m.
Maddie Cannon earned a personal best and regional qualifying mark in the 3k steeplechase (10:12.76).
Madelyn Dickson finished first in the 1500m (4:19.56) to earn a regional qualifying mark and personal best. Anna Camp finished sixth with a new PR at 4:21.96.
