PROVO, Utah – BYU track and field wrapped up day three of the BYU Indoor Invitational on Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse with strong finishes in each event.

“It was an outstanding meet,” head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We accomplished what we wanted to in terms of all of the event groups were able to see the work that they’ve done throughout the fall pay off. I was super pleased with all of our event groups.”

The meet featured athletes from BYU and UVU and unattached athletes. Results from the meet will help determine who will travel with the team for the upcoming track meets.

Sophomore Whittni Orton finished first in the mile with a time of 4:49.73, securing her one of the top times in the nation.

“It is probably the No. 2 top time in the country right now if you take into consideration the altitude conversion,” Eyestone said. “That was a super good opener for her and will set her up well for the rest of the season.”

Sophomore Anna Camp finished first in the 800m (2:10.61), which Eyestone called a dominating win on her part.

Senior Sierra Hansen earned a 4.05m mark in the pole vault. Junior Andrea Stapleton finished the high jump at 1.75m to place first.

Freshman Clayson Shumway earned one of the fastest times in the country thus far with his 8:15.93 finish in the 3000m race. Conner Mantz ran his first race in uniform as a freshman and finished right behind Shumway in second (8:18.7). Senior Abraham Alvarado secured first in the mile with a time of 4:09.6. While Alvarado is an 800m runner, Eyestone said he was proud of him for stepping up and running the mile that well.

Sophomore Jesus Serrano finished first in the 60mH (8.15) and senior Max Scheible placed first in the 500m (1.06.01).

Rickey Fantroy won the triple jump with a 14.85m finish.

“I think that if you looked at all of our groups, they all represented people with high performances that performed really well,” Eyestone said.
