Forty-six BYU athletes advance to 2017 NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries

PROVO, Utah — Forty-six BYU athletes qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminaries on May 25-27 in Austin, Texas.

The Cougars boast a strong showing in the 3000-meter steeplechase in both men’s and women’s competition, with five and three qualifiers, respectively. Clayson Shumway and Daniel Carney rank in the top 10 in the West, while Jacob HeslingtonMitchell Briggs and Porter Reddish will also compete.

Three female steeplechase athletes are nationally ranked with Kristi Rush at No. 6, Erica Birk at No. 7 and Courtney Wayment at No. 12.

Tatenda Tsumba sits at No. 10 in the 100m and No. 17 in the 200m. Clayton Young qualified in the 5,000m and 10,000m, holding a No. 3 in the latter. Rory Linkletter will compete in the 10,000m as the No. 12 seed. In addition, three Cougars will race in the 1500m: Chase Horrocks (No. 9), Talem Franco (No. 31) and Kramer Morton (No. 33).

On the women’s side, Shea Collinsworth currently holds the third-fastest time in the 800m in the West. Brenna Porter qualified at No. 9 in the 400-meter hurdles.
