Cannon and Ross race in finals at the 2016 USATF Junior Championships
CLOVIS, Cali. — Four BYU track and field athletes participated in the 2016 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships over the weekend in Clovis, California. Connor Ross and Rachel Cannon placed in the top 10 in the men’s and women’s 1500m race. Lauren Ellsworth was one spot away from competing in the 800m finals and Tomi Adegoke placed 15th overall in the men’s long jump.
“It was a really good experience for them. The sky is the limit for these two,” BYU track and field head coach Ed Eyestone said. “Connor had some great experience running at this level. For most of the year he was an 800m runner so this is still a very new event for him and once he gains more experience in this event I believe it will be a very good race for him.”
As previously mentioned, Ross has been running the 800m race this season. This was only his third time racing in the 1500m run. He placed eighth overall in the men’s 1500m run with a time of 3:52.35.
Cannon has recently been called on a mission to Belgium, making this her last race until she returns. She finished ninth overall in the women’s 1500m race with a season best time of 4:36.36.
Ellsworth recorded a time of 2:09.22 in the women’s 800m preliminaries and was only 11 milliseconds off from qualifying for the final race. Her time ranked 10th overall. With a mark of 6.82m, Adegoke finished 15th in the men’s long jump.
