Smith runs away with two events, Blackham win high jump again

PROVO, Utah – Makenna Smith won the mile and 800 meters Thursday, as BYU participated in its Last Chance Invitational at the Clarence F. Robison Track Complex.
Smith, a senior, finished with times of 4:58.19 in the mile and 2:14.32 in the 800 meters in her last home meet at BYU.
Competing in the heptathlon, sophomore Nicole Laws jumped to a personal record in the high jump. Her mark of 5-feet-10.5-inches (1.79 meters) places her ninth overall in school history.
Sophomore Zachary Blackham took home another win in the high jump with a mark of 7-feet-1-inch (2.16 meters). Blackham has now won the high jump at nine meets during his collegiate career.
Kaylee Packham ran away with the 400-meter hurdles and moved into eighth all-time in school history in that event (barring potential wind adjustment or negation) with a time of 59.05.
Redshirt sprinter Tatenda Tsumba showed signs of things to come, registering wind-assisted times of 10.34 in the 100 meters and 20.68 in the 200 meters. Thursday’s wind-aided sprint times do not qualify for records, but Tsumba’s performances are among the best in BYU track and field history.
With the regular season in the books, qualified athletes will compete in the NCAA West Preliminaries, which begin May 28.
