SEATTLE – Jason Witt broke the University of Washington Invitational record in the 5000 meters Friday, and Shaquille Walker broke the school indoor record in the 800 meters as BYU athletes competed in two meets over the weekend.

"It was a great weekend for us," BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. "We had some guys opening up in their respective events and we saw some fireworks."

Witt's time of 13:42.09 bested his personal record in the 5000 meters by ten seconds, placing him just over a tenth of a second behind Jared Ward's school record (13:41.97) from 2013. Ward, who's currently part of the BYU track and field staff, paced Witt to his easy victory. The Cougars swept the event with Steve Flint (14:11.33) and Spencer Hanson (14:13.15) finishing second and third.

Walker's time of 1:47.44 in the 800 meters became the fastest indoor time in school history and the fifth-fastest 800-meter time overall for a BYU runner. His time is also the third-fastest 800 meters in the nation this year.

Dallin Farnsworth and Jonathan Harper added to the Cougars' success in distance races with Farnsworth winning the 3000 meters (8:12.04) and Harper taking second in the mile (4:07.21).

BYU women Madelyn Brooks (2:10.25) and Emily Bever (2:10.54) took first and second in the 800 meters.
