BYU qualifies 42 athletes for West Preliminary

PROVO, Utah – BYU qualified 42 athletes for next week’s NCAA Division I 2014 Outdoor Track & Field Championships - West Preliminary as announced by the NCAA on Thursday.

Several of the athletes qualified in more than one event, bringing BYU’s total to 49 qualifying marks.

Curtis Carr is the highest seeded Cougar landing at No. 2 in the steeplechase. On the women’s side, Andrea Harrison is eighth in the steeplechase.

Jared Ward is in the top 10 in both the 5,000-meter (seventh) and 10,000-meter (fourth) races. Jason Witt (third) and Jonathan Nelson (ninth) join Ward in the top 10 of the 10,000 meter.

Lexi Eaton and Dakoda John are the highest rated Cougars in the field events both landing at No. 12 in the high jump.

Chase Dalton and Joshua Weirich automatically advance to the decathlon finals at the NCAA Championships from June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.

The women's team was No. 21 in total qualifying marks with 17.

The West Preliminary will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 29-31. Athletes will be competing for a chance to participate in the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
