Cougars look for qualifying marks at MPSF
PROVO, Utah—The women’s track and field team will travel to Seattle to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship meet.
Seventeen schools will compete at the MPSF Championships beginning Friday, including in-state rival Utah.
The championship meet is the last chance for athletes to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships. No regional meet is held during indoor season.
"We really want to do well at nationals, and to do that we need to get more qualifiers,” head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We should have a good showing and up our team ranking as well. We can do it, we just need to step up.”
Senior Rachel Fisher is among the currently qualified with a national ranking of No. 19 in the pole vault and will be competing this weekend.
BYU’s distance medley relay team has also qualified with a national ranking of 45, with a time of 11:31.57, and will also be competing at the meet.
From the distance team, freshman Shea Martinez will compete in the 800m, sophomore Makenna Smith will compete in the 3,000 alongside senior teammate Andrea Nelson Harrison. These three women have an opportunity to earn a qualifying mark and compete at Nationals on March 14-15.
The meet will run Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 - March 1. Friday’s events will begin at noon PST and conclude with the men’s and women’s distance medley relay at 7:10 p.m. and 7:25 p.m., respectively. Saturday’s slate begins at 10:30 a.m. PST and finishes close to 3 p.m. For more information, visit the meet information page, which will also contain a full schedule and live results.
