Cougars duo loses in doubles finals

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s tennis team wrapped up its last day of the BYU Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.

"We learned a lot from this tournament about where we are and what we need to work on," head coach Laruen Jones-Spencer said. "I know we will continue to get better each match we play."

The Cougar team of Desiree Tran and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon won three matches in the tournament to reach the doubles championship match but fell in the finals to Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova of Wyoming, 8-3.

Synkova also won the singles crown, beating Utah State’s McKenzie Davis, 6-2, 7-5.

BYU sophomore Lisa Waldron competed with Boise State’s Teal Vosburgh for the doubles championship in the consolation bracket. The two forced a tie-breaker set but eventually lost to Utah State’s Kallie Sperry and Kristina Voytsekhovich, 9-8, 7-2.

Waldron also earned her way to the finals in the singles consolation bracket but had to forfeit due to injury.

The Cougars continue their pre-season play as they travel to the Cal and Boise Invitationals next week.
