Two BYU pairs move on in Cal Invitational

BERKELEY -- Two pairs of athletes advanced for the BYU women’s tennis team in doubles play at the Cal Nike Invitational Friday after a tough Round of 32 in singles.

Callie Craig and Megan Price started the day off with a strong 8-6 victory over Alex Poorta and Catherine Isip of St. Mary’s College in the Gold Doubles bracket. In the White Doubles bracket, Andie Young and Kelsie Craig took on San Jose State’s Anna Guzman and Olivia Marshall and also pulled off an 8-6 win.

Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova lost to Sacramento State’s Alina Savchuk and Katharina Noebl 9-7 in the Blue Doubles bracket.

The Cougars met disappointment in singles action, with only one player winning and five players losing in the Round of 32.

Keslie Craig defeated Santa Clara University’s Eleanor Ford 6-2, 6-3, but lost in the Round of 16.

Price fought hard in the Gold Bracket’s Round of 32, but came up just short in her 7-6, 6-4 loss to Poorta of St. Mary’s. Callie Craig entered a three-set battle with Sacramento State’s Clarisse Baca, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

In the Blue Bracket, Jessica Agra of Santa Clara defeated Carney in the Round of 16 and Ezhova lost to Nevada’s Florence DeVrye.

Price, Carney and Young won their respective matches in the consolation brackets. Callie Craig lost and Ezhova had a bye in the consolation rounds.

Callie Craig and Price play at 9 a.m. and Young and Kelsie Craig play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
