No. 4 Cougars fall to No. 1 Waves in WCC Semifinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 4 BYU women's fell to No. 1 Pepperdine 4-0 on Friday afternoon in the West Coast Conference semifinals.

After winning their first-ever WCC tournament match under head coach Holly Hasler yesterday, the Cougars were bested by the No. 7 ranked Waves ending BYU's tournament run. 

Doubles

  1. No. 1 Broadus/Tjen (PEP) def. No. 47 Astle/Dunyon 6-4
  2. No. 48 Zaar/Thamchaiwat (PEP) def. Huang/Li 6-4
  3. Jiao/Wheatley (BYU) UF. Redelijk/Anna Campana 4-5

      Order of finish: 1, 2

In No. 1 doubles, No. 47 Astle and Dunyon fell behind 3-1 and eventually fell to the top-ranked doubles team in the country, Broadus and Tjen. 

Huang and Li, at No. 2 doubles, jumped out to a 2-1 lead and later led 4-3 before no. 48 Zaar and Thamchaiwat won three-straight games, clinching the doubles point for the Waves. 

Jiao and Wheatley, at No. 3 doubles, fell down 1-3 early and cut their deficit to 4-5 before the match was left unfinished. 

Singles

  1. No. 31 Lisa Zaar (PEP) UF. Bobo Huang 3-6, 6-3, 1-1
  2. No. 19 Savannah Broadus (PEP) def. Emilee Astle 6-1, 6-2
  3. No. 16 Janice Tjen (PEP) UF. Tina Li 6-4, 2-6, 5-0
  4. Jacque Dunyon (BYU) UF. Bunyawai Thamchaiwat 7-6 (8-6), 3-3
  5. No. 108 Nikki Redelijk (PEP) def. Helen Jiao 6-3, 6-4
  6. Anna Campana (PEP) def. Emmie Moore 6-2, 6-1

      Order of finish: 6, 2, 5

Moore, at No. 6, fell down to Campana 2-5 and later lost the first set 2-6. Moore in the second set was defeated by Campana giving Pepperdine its first singles victory of the day. 

Astle, at No. 2, lost the first set 1-6 and was later defeated by No. 19 Broadcus after falling in the second set. 

Jiao, at No. 5, trailed 2-4 against no. 108 Redelijk and fell in the first set 3-6. Jiao, in the second set, fell down 1-4 but came back and tied the score at 4-4 before Redlijk won two-straight games clinching the overall match for Pepperdine. 

Huang, at No. 1, was tied 2-2 with no. 19 Broadus before going on to win the set 6-3. In the second set, Huang fell 3-6 sending the two to a third set. In the third set, the two were tied at 1-1 before the match was left unfinished. 

Li, at No. 3, trailed 3-4 to No. 16 Tjen and was eventually defeated in the first set 4-6. In the second set, Li jumped out to a 3-0 lead and won 6-2 forcing a decisive third set. Li, trailed 0-5 in the third set before the match was left unfinished. 

Dunyon, at No. 4, was tied 4-4 with Thamchaiwat and then 6-6 before Dunyon won the tiebreaker 8-6 and won the first set. In the second set, the two were tied at 3-3 before the match was left unfinished.
