Jones Earns BYU Invitational Title
PROVO -- The BYU Invitational singles title will remain with the BYU women’s tennis team after freshman McCall Jones defeated Boise State’s Lauren Megale in the finals Saturday.
Jones was down 2-3 in the first set before winning four games in a row to take the lead. Her consistent play continued in the second set, despite a short rain delay and relocation to the BYU indoor courts. Jones went up 5-0 before dropping two games en route to her straight set victory.
“It was my first college tournament so it feels nice to win it,” Jones said.
BYU junior Chie Hayasaka enjoyed success of her own in the consolation round, making it to the finals after a tough three-set semifinal victory over Boise State’s Klaudia Wlodarczyk. Hayasaka lost the first set before dominating the second 6-1 and coming back to force a tiebreak in the third. Because of time constraints, the final between her and Utah’s Erin Monson was not played.
“If we can keep building on this, things are going to be really good this year,” BYU coach Craig Manning said. “I can’t wait to get out on the practice court next week.”
This year’s doubles winners were Boise State’s Megale and Wlodarczyk, who defeated Utes Monson and Anastasia Putilina 8-1 in the final.
The Cougars will continue their fall season next weekend when they head to California for the Cal Berkeley Invite.
