Cougar Women's Tennis Team Beats Utah
BYU's women's tennis team captured its third Mountain West Conference tennis match of the season with an easy 8-1 victory over instate rival Utah, Friday.
The win improves the Cougars record to 8-5, 3-0 on the season, while Utah falls to 6-8, 3-3.
Jodi Richardson led the way for BYU in singles action with her second position win over Irini Kotoglou 6-2, 6-4. Kim Kelly, from Salt Lake City, Utah, defeated Frida Kareld 6-4, 6-2. Tara Ferguson, Liza Khoudoiarova, and Dominique Reynolds also won their singles matches for the Cougars. The number five singles match between BYU's Khoudoiarova and Utah's Ronnberg was the only three-set win for the Cougars. All other matches were won in straight sets.
"Overall, we played very well and this was one of our strongest performances this season," said head coach Craig Manning.
Senior Eline Chiew dropped the lone BYU match at the number one singles spot. Utah's Megan Payne-Dorny captured the 6-3, 7-6 win for Utah. Chiew had beaten Payne in all previous matches between the two. The Cougars also swept the doubles action.
BYU travels to Florida for its final two matches of the season before heading to Las Vegas for the MWC Championships. The Cougars play Florida on April 7 and Arkansas on April 8 in Gainesville.
