PROVO, Utah – BYU women's tennis freshman Emmie Moore has enjoyed the beginning of her collegiate tennis career and is looking forward to having a successful first season with the Cougars.

Her Love For Tennis

Moore’s first love for tennis was inspired by her sister Kate. Watching Kate play encouraged Moore to give tennis a shot. Attending Kate’s lessons was truly the beginning of a life dedicated to tennis. Moore convinced Kate’s coach to let her hit a couple of balls and that’s when the coach realized her talent and potential. Moore then began to take her own lessons and the rest is history.

Friendships

Moore has enjoyed her short time at BYU and loves her teammates. One teammate that she has particularly grown close to is fellow freshman, Tina Li. “We have really bonded together,” said Moore. “She has been a great teammate and it has been fun to start the year off with another freshman. She has become one of my best friends.” Moore admires how outgoing and honest Li is, how hard she fights on the court and her loyalty.

Journey to BYU

Moore grew up a Ute fan as both of her parents attended the University of Utah. But, it was BYU that stood out to her on one of the many recruiting trips she took. “I fell in love with the whole idea of the community,” said Moore. “Everyone was just involved and wanted the best for all the athletes and the students.”

There were plenty of universities that offered Moore a chance to play for them, but it was BYU that she felt the most drawn to. “The coaching staff and the teammates really stood out to me,” said Moore. “I liked everything about it.”

Idol

Moore’s Great Grandfather Rasmussen is someone that she has looked up to throughout her life. He played tennis and is someone she can relate to. He was known to be a tough competitor on the court, but was also one of the kindest people off the court. “That always stood out to me,” said Moore. “It made me want to be a competitor on the court but also be kind and humble at the same time. He’s always been someone I’ve looked up to.”

Season Goals

Moore has her eyes set on helping her team win the West Coast Conference and is hungry to help her squad beat their rivals. “I want to beat Utah,” said Moore. “My whole family is big Utah fans and that gives me more motivation.”

Although Moore’s parents are Utes, they will be wearing BYU tennis gear and supporting their daughter when the Cougars match up against Utah. The Utes make the visit Provo on Mar. 11, 2023.

A personal goal that Moore has for herself this season is to be competitive in every match, to never give up and to beat the best.

For Fun

Moore’s favorite song is Cover Me Up by Morgan Wallen, and she enjoys singing and playing the guitar in her free time.
