BYU women's tennis falls to San Diego in final day of ITA Kick-off

BERKELEY, Cali – BYU women’s tennis fell 4-0 to San Diego in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-off Weekend on Saturday.

The Toreros took two of the three doubles matches. Senior Leah Heimuli and Helen Jiao fell 6-3 in their match against Solymar Colling and Elizabeth Goldsmith in the No. 1 spot. Senior Anastasia Abramyan and freshman Bobo Huang lost 6-1 to Abigail Desiatnikov and Jordyn McBride in the No. 2 spot. Junior Emilee Astle and sophomore Kara won 6-1 over Claudia De Las Heras and Victoria Kalaitzis in the No. 3 spot.

The Cougars fought hard in their singles matches, forcing multiple three-set matches and tiebreakers, however they ultimately dropped the first three matches to the Toreros. Freshman Jacque Dunyon fell 6-3 in both her sets against Desiatnikov. Jiao dropped her singles match to Goldsmith 6-2, 7-6(4) after losing the tiebreaker. Freshman Madison Smith had BYU’s final defeat, falling 6-0, 7-6 to De Las Heras. The final three singles matches held between Heimuli and Colling, Huang and McBride, and Lin and Kalaitzis were unfinished.

BYU hosts its home opener Saturday, Feb. 5 in a double header against Boise State at 10 a.m. MST and Dixie State at 4 p.m. MST at the Indoor Tennis Courts.

4-Goldsmith (SD) d Jiao (BYU) 6-2, 7-6(4)

5-De Las Heras (SD) d Smith (BYU) 6-0, 7-6

6-Kalaitzis (SD) v Lin (BYU) 4-6, 6-6 unf.
