PROVO, Utah--The final day of the BYU Invitational closed with the Cougars taking home the singles title for the sixth time in seven years, Saturday.

The match of the day was between junior Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and freshman Savannah Ware, both of BYU. The junior took the first set 6-1. Ware tried to respond by taking the first game of the second set, but Sheehan-Dizon answered, going up 3-1. Ware then won the fifth game, cutting the lead, 3-2, but Sheehan-Dizon's experience proved too much as she won the next three games to take the set, 6-2, clinching the match.

"I'm happy with the way the tournament turned out," BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. "We proved that we're a better team this year."

In the 2012 Invitational the Cougars came away empty-handed. Sheehan-Dizon lost in the quarterfinals of the singles and in the doubles final.

"I didn't do too well in the tournament last season, so I trained harder this summer," Sheehan-Dizon said.

So far, her hard work has paid dividends. In addition to her singles title, Sheehan-Dizon won doubles with teammate Mayci Jones on Friday.

BYU looks to use this momentum as a springboard into their pre-season schedule. The Cougars head out next weekend to compete in the Cal Nike Invitational, Sept. 27-28.
