BYU remains perfect at Indoor Tennis Courts with 6-1 win over Weber State
PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis (9-5) defeated Weber State (2-7), 6-1, for the second time this season at the Indoor Tennis Courts Friday morning.
"Today was a fun match," said BYU head coach Holly Hasler. "We’ve been working on specific things and today we executed strategically, physically, mentally. It was a true team effort and a perfect way to enter conference play next week."
Unlike the first matchup between BYU and Weber State, the Cougars started out on top, clinching the doubles point with ease. Anastasia Abramyan and Helen Jiao raced out to a 6-1 victory over Yuuna Ukita and Ana Morrett. In the first meeting, Abramyan (then partnered with Madeline Wanlass) was defeated 7-5 by Ukita and Morett. Kara Lin and Qianxin Kong gave BYU its first point of the day after defeating Sicely Ferreira and Megan Lombardi, 6-2. Leah Heimuli and Emilee Astle were leading Pei-Hsuan Kuo and Megan Davies, 4-2, but the No. 2 match went unfinished.
BYU quickly picked up points two and three with Abramyan defeating Ukita, 6-1, 6-0, and Heimuli defeating Morett, 6-0, 6-4. Lombardi kept Weber State in it, picking up the Wildcats’ first win of the day, with a victory over Lin, 6-4, 7-5. No. 4 Astle and Davies battled into the third set, and Astle was able to come out on top with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory.
Astle’s point gave the Cougars their ninth win of the season and sixth win at home. BYU is a perfect 6-0 at the indoor courts this year.
Jiao and Kuo faced off in the No. 5 slot. Jiao dominated from start to finish, beating Kuo 6-2 in the first frame and 6-3 in the second. Xenia de Luna rounded out the match for the Cougars in the No. 6 spot. De Luna picked up her seventh win (7-1) of the year in a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 defeat of Ferreira.
Conference play begins next Friday, Mar. 19, with a home match against Portland. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. MDT. The Cougars then return to play the following day as they host Utah State. That match will start at 11 a.m. MDT. Live stats will be provided for both contests, and a live stream will also be available should either match be played indoors.
As a reminder, until further notice, only family members are allowed to attend home matches. Family members will need to be on a pre-existing list and provide photo ID in order to attend.
