First-round results in the Mountain West Conference Championships

BYU and Colorado State are tied for the team lead as sophomore Carrie Summerhays shot a first-round low of 72 in the Mountain West Conference Championships at St. George Utah's Sunbrook Golf Course.

"Even though we weren't playing our best, we're still in a very good position to win the first conference championship in the Mountain West Conference," BYU head coach Gary Howard. "We started a little tentative today, but I think we'll settle down more as a team tomorrow."

Summerhays holds a three-shot lead heading into Tuesdays' second round. Other Cougars posting solid first rounds were Summer Pierce and Adrianne Gibby who shot 78 and 79 respectively.

"Carrie played an excellent round of golf today. She had a great par save on the twelfth and eighteenth holes to finish even for the day," said Howard.

The Mountain West Conference Championship continues on Tuesday, with the third and final round played on Wednesday at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
