Mateo finishes tied for 52nd at NCAA Stanford Regional
STANFORD, Calif. – BYU’s Allysha Mae Mateo shot a 5-over 76 on Wednesday to finish the NCAA Stanford Regional tied for 52nd with a 54-hole score of 10-over 223.
Mateo birdied the first hole of the day to get off to a good start in the third round and added another birdie on No. 7 to shoot 1-over on the front. A couple of rough holes on the back nine made it difficult for the junior from Honolulu, Hawaii to gain momentum.
Her three-round score of 74-73-76—223, put Mateo in a tie for 52nd with golfers from Arizona, Denver, New Mexico State and Navy, which was not low enough to qualify for NCAA Nationals.
The three low-scoring individuals from non-advancing teams were Kajsa Arwefjall of San Jose State, Brigitte Thibault of Fresno State and Anna Zanusso of Denver. These will join the six advancing teams from the Stanford Regional at the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 21-26.
Although Mateo came up short of reaching nationals, she posted the second-lowest score among the five individual competitors, finishing ahead of Brittany Shin of Cal State Fullerton by one shot, Holland Shourds of Long Beach State by five and Victoria Estrada of UVU by 10.
“Allysha Mae had a great season,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “We wish she could have finished better but it doesn’t take away from the fact that she was solid all year long.”
Mateo closes her junior season at BYU having posted the Cougars lowest score in eight of ten tournaments. She did so with a stroke average of 73.53 — good for eighth-best in program history. Mateo also recording five top-5 finishes, with four in the top-3.
The conclusion of the NCAA Regional marks the close of the 2020-21 season for BYU women’s golf. As a team, the Cougars closed out the year with top-five finishes in their last five events, including a third place finish at the WCC Tournament.
