BYU Invitational kicks off with men's heptathlon

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU men's track team officially kicked off its season Thursday at the Smith Fieldhouse, starting with the men's heptathlon. Through four events, Utah Valley University's Michael McPherson (unattached) leads the way with 2,941 points.

"We had a good day today, about what we expected," head coach Mark Robison said. "We'll get to see a lot more tomorrow and find out where we stand as a team and how we'll be able to compete this season."

BYU's Joshua Weirich is in second place after day one of the heptathlon, scoring 2,839 points. Fellow Cougars Chase Dalton and Isaac Robison are third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 2,783 and 2,556.

The men and women's discus finals were also held Thursday. Winston Wilkinson and Clinton Prestwich threw unattached and placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Wilkinson threw 146-11.75 feet while Prestwich threw 139-01.25 feet.

On the women's side, BYU sophomore Brianna French threw 145-07.25 feet and earned second place. Freshman Meaghan Heffelfinger threw 125-10.25 feet and finished in sixth.
