NEW ORLEANS--The BYU men’s track & field team was named the Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year in Division I for the 2011 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  Along with the Cougars, Florida State University won the corresponding outdoor award.

The USTFCCCA Scholar Team of the Year award is given to the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively.

The Cougars finished in third place at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, with a score of 34 points.

Junior Miles Batty, who was named the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Track Athlete of the Year, won the national championship in the mile, with a time of 3:59.49.

Also winning national championships in their respective events was the DMR team of Brian Weirich, Justin Hedin, Chris Carter and Batty with a time of 9:29.28, and senior Leif Arrhenius in the indoor shot put.

Batty, who was named the National Indoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was also named to the USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track & Field team, along with nine other Cougars. Alden Bahr, Colby Barber, Jacob Cosby, Tanner Emrich, Trevor Heiner, Cade Lindahl, Nate Ogden, Jared Rohatinsky and Rex Shields were named to the All-Academic team alongside Batty.

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the men’s 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Teams. BYU was one of 90 institutions that earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.
