Arrhenius Named MWC Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year
June 16, 2011 -- BYU senior Leif Arrhenius and TCU senior Jessica Young have been selected as the 2011 Mountain West Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
A product of Orem, Utah, Arrhenius came close to capturing the men's discus and shot put titles, respectively, at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last week. In the discus throw, Arrhenius finished in second place and was recognized as a first-team All-American after recording a mark of 201'-3.00" (61.36m) in the event. He also garnered first-team All-America accolades in the shot put, earning runner-up honors with a throw of 63'-6.75" (19.37m).
Hailing from Columbia, S.C., Young earned first-team All-America honors for a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She clocked a time of 11.14 seconds to capture the bronze medal in the event. Young also was recognized as a second-team All-American in the 200-meter dash, finishing 14th overall at the NCAA Championships with a time of 23.15 seconds.
The MW Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of outdoor track & field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
