EUGENE, Ore. -- Three more athletes from the BYU men’s track team qualified for the NCAA Championships on the second day of the West Regional Prelims.

“Everything wasn’t too bad today obviously. We have seven kids into Nationals now so I am very, very pleased,” head coach Mark Robison said. “If we can get some more in that would be amazing.”

Adding three more qualifiers for Nationals today, the Cougars total is at seven with a few more athletes competing tomorrow. With seven and counting, BYU has a good chance to score points and have a good performance at the NCAA Championships on June 8-11.

“We hope to have a good day tomorrow,” Robison said. “If we do that we can keep things rolling.”

After securing a spot in the quarterfinals yesterday, junior Justin Hedin clocked a 1:48.71 in the 800 meters, good enough for 10th overall. With the time he advances to Nationals.

Joining him is sophomore Jacob Cosby in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Cosby finished in fifth place overall with a time of 8:48.64 to advance. The Cougars had three others compete in the race. Junior Josh Adams (9:11.32) and freshman Benjamin Johnston (9:11.93) finished in 31st and 32nd overall. Senior Reagan Frey finished in 45th with a time of 9:39.20.

The third member of BYU’s team to qualify today was senior Trevor Heiner in the high jump. He cleared 2.11m (6-11.00) to tie for 11th place and earn a spot at Nationals.

Senior Oliver Whaley competed in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.50m (191-11.00), good for 25th place overall.
