Outdoor Season Opens in San Diego

SAN -- In the first meet of the outdoor track and field season, the BYU women’s track and field team competed at the Aztec Invitational and came away with several positive performances.

"We had some pretty good opening performances," head coach Patrick Shane said. "We normally train through the first few meets of the outdoor season and don't look for great marks but today went really well."

The 1500m race was the top competition for the Cougars as they took the top three spots. Senior Stacy Slight finished first in 4:30.73, Candace Eddy placed second in 4:33.60 and Michaelanne Laurent nabbed third in 4:35.06.

Katy Andrews also earned a victory at the meet, finishing first in the 5000m in 16:38.12. Lindsay Sowards and Lisa Drury also competed in the event, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the sprint events, the relay team of Porshe Giddings, Arlene Gowar, Aubrey Hale and Mindy Sagers placed fifth in the 4x100m in a time of 46.48. Hale and Gowar also competed in the 100m dash, placing eighth (12.12) and ninth (12.13), respectively.

Elizabeth Wilson was the Cougars top performer in the field events, placing third in the long jump. Wilson leapt 5.84m (19-02.00) to secure the top three finish.

BYU will head back to California to compete in the Stanford Invitational on March 25-26. The Cougars will take a complete squad to the meet, including Indoor National Champion Lacey Bleazard.
