BYU Volunteer Assistant Breaks U.S. Record

PROVO -- BYU women’s track and field volunteer assistant coach Jillian Camarena-Williams has been named the USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week after winning her seventh consecutive indoor U.S. title Sunday at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Camerena-Williams recorded a personal best shot put throw of 19.87m (65-02.25) that broke the American record set by Ramona Pagel in 1987. The mark also moved her to the top of the current world-standings.

“I’m shocked! I have been training well, but you never expect that,” Camerena-Williams said. “Once they pulled the steel tape to verify the mark, it was a whirlwind. It was so fun!”

Camarena-Williams volunteers as a throws coach for the Cougars and is married to women’s track and field trainer Dustin Williams. Head coach Patrick Shane and the No. 8 BYU women’s track and field team will compete at the NCAA National Championships on March 11-12.
