Batty Named MWC Athlete of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS -- After breaking a 31-year-old school record in the mile, junior Miles Batty was selected as the Mountain West Conference’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
With his second Athlete of the Week honor of the season, the native of Sandy ran a 3:55.79 time in the mile at the Flotrack Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington. The record-breaking performance beat two-time Olympian and current assistant track coach Doug Padilla’s time of 3:56.85 in 1980 for BYU’s top mark.
During the race, Batty was started in the back of the pack and against the outside facility wall. Batty managed to move up and keep pace with professional runner and 10,000-meter American record holder Chris Solinsky.
Batty now holds the MWC record and currently has the fastest unadjusted collegiate time in the country. The time is also an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark. Batty also ranks 16th in the NCAA in the 800-meter with a time of 1:48.88.
