Men's Track Makes Mark On Day One

NEW YORK -- On day one of competition several members of the No. 18 BYU men’s track team were able to perform well and establish good marks at the New Balance Invitational in New York on Friday.

Juniors James Derek McAllister and sophomore Sean Adams ran well in their prelim races, earning places in the finals for the college 200-meter dash and championship 400-meter dash, respectively. McAllister ran a 22.20 in the 200-meter and Adams finished the 400-meter in 48.09 to qualify for Saturday’s finals.

The Cougar’s distance medley team nabbed a third place finish in the championship division with junior Chris Carter, freshman Cody Helbling, and sophomores Ryan Jones and Taylor Farnsworth finishing in a time of 9:48.98.

Senior Phillip Bettis finished third in the college 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.33 while junior James Ghormley competed in the college 60-meter dash in 6.90. Freshman Mark Carlson also competed in the sprints with a 500-meter time of 1:06.03 for fifth place.

BYU made its mark in day one of the field events with senior Trevor Heiner securing a third place finish in the college high jump, clearing 2.03m. Freshman Parker Cressman came in sixth while clearing 1.98m.

In the college long jump it was senior Aaron Powell who jumped 7.17m to finish in sixth place with junior Kyle Mills turning in a jump of 6.53m.

Freshman Zachary Stetler represented BYU’s throwers well in the championship division of the shot put, turning in a throw of 16.24m for 13th place.

The New Balance Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 6:55 a.m. MDT.
