PROVO -- As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the BYU men’s and women’s track and field teams are working together with the local wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for families in need.

“It is a great opportunity we have as men’s and women’s track and field to bless the lives of others during this time of Thanksgiving,” BYU head women’s coach Patrick Shane said. “All the athletes have had the chance to contribute with food and other things and it has been an amazing process.”

Athletes from both teams have been collecting turkey vouchers from local grocers and will have enough to purchase 20 turkeys.

“Ann Haymond, our track and field secretary, came up with the idea,” Shane said. “She deserves a lot of the credit. She came up with the entire concept, cleared it through the coaches and has done everything since that point.”

The teams will be providing turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, vegetables, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce to families chosen by local bishops. Ward relief societies will provide the rolls for the meals.
