Weirich Takes First MWC Athlete of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior Brian Weirich has been selected as the Mountain West Conference men’s outdoor track & field athlete of the week, while Utah senior Sarah Grimm has been named women’s outdoor track & field athlete of the week.

Brian Weirich's performance in the 1,500 meters at the Robison Invitational last weekend gave the senior his first MWC Athlete of the Week honor and the third in six weeks for BYU this outdoor season.

Weirich, from Fredericksburg, Texas, put forth a standout performance in the mile race at the Robison Invitational on Saturday at the Clarence F. Robison Track & Field Complex in Provo, Utah. Weirich clocked a 1500-meter time of 3:44.95 in the event, placing first among collegiate runners and second overall. That time is a personal best for Weirich and ranks fourth overall in the MWC this season. His current time also ranks 15th in the NCAA West Region and 37th in the country, according to the Web site TFRRS.org.

A product of Sandy, Utah, Grimm finished first overall in the hammer throw at the Robison Invitational over the weekend at the Clarence F. Robison Track & Field Complex in Provo, Utah. Grimm broke a four-year school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 207’-1.75” (63.14m) in the event. The previous school record holder in the event was Vanessa Mortensen, with a toss of 205’-0.” Grimm’s toss in the hammer throw is a lifetime-best mark and ranks first in the Conference and fifth in the nation during the 2010 outdoor season, according to the Web site TFRRS.org. Grimm rounded out her weekend slate by earning sixth place in the discus throw with a mark of 131’-2” (39.98m).
