BYU Jumpers, Throwers Earn Marks at Robison Invite

PROVO -- Sean Richardson and Leif Arrhenius moved up in the national rankings in their respective events at the Clarence F. Robison Invitational on Friday.

Richardson threw the javelin 71.84 meters to move up in the national rankings and win the event. The Cougars' Blaine Baker finished second in the event with a distance of 64.46 meters.

Competition was shortened due to stormy weather, leaving all events but the javelin, long jump, discus and 5,000-meter run to take place tomorrow in timed heats.

Also on the men's side, junior thrower Leif Arrhenius won the discus competition with a throw of 59.68 meters, vaulting him from eighth to third place in the nation in the event. Colby Barber posted a mark of 40.68 meters and Phillip Bettis went for 35.82 meters, also in the discus.

Aaron Powell took first place in the long jump with a mark of 7.26 meters. Anse Myller DeAraujo placed fifth with a 7.01 meters, while Jonathan Furguson and David Holgate recorded distances of 6.60 and 6.59 meters, respectively.

For the Cougar women, Sarah Lancaster finished in second place with a distance of 44.62 meters in the javelin throw, a season high for the senior. Allyson Wardell finished right behind in third place at 43.54 meters.

Amber Freeman, Julie Larsen and Coriann Clark rounded out the top ten finishers for BYU at fifth, sixth and tenth, respectively.

In the long jump, Fatima Makakala took second with a distance of 5.50 meters. Erica Shields took third at 5.48 meters and Mindy Robins finished fifth with a mark of 5.40 meters.

Mellissa Keltner (6th, 5.31m), Taylor Stapley (8th, 5.22) and Aubri Salazar (11th, 4.99) also competed in the long jump.

Competition will continue on Saturday at the Robison complex beginning with the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. in the field events and 1 p.m. with the 4x100 meter women's relay final.
