Arrhenius Named MWC Athlete of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior Leif Arrhenius has been selected as the Mountain West Conference men’s outdoor track & field athlete of the week, while Air Force senior Sara Neubauer has been named MWC women’s outdoor track & field athlete of the week.

The award is Arrhenius' second honor of the year after being named athlete of the week during the indoor season.

Arrhenius, from Orem, Utah, put forth standout performances in the discus throw at the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. and Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Arrhenius began the weekend by capturing the discus title at the Mesa Classic, earning the top spot in the event with a season-best distance of 189’-11” (57.88m).

Competing at Sun Angel Classic on Saturday, Arrhenius finished in third place in the discus throw, overtaking his previous season-best mark by recording a distance of 192’-3” (58.61m). That mark ranks first in the MWC by more than 11 feet and is eighth overall in the NCAA, according to TFRRS.org. Arrhenius also competed in the shot put at the Sun Angel classic, taking second-place honors with a mark of 59’-3” (18.06m). That mark is tops in the MWC and is 13th in the nation this season, according to TFRRS.org.

A product of Bottineau, N.D., Neubauer set a school record in the hammer throw at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., recording a distance of 186’-5” (56.83m) to place third overall in the event. That mark, which surpassed Neubauer’s former personal-best by nearly four feet, ranks third in the conference and 34th in the nation this season, according to TFRRS.org.

In addition to her performance in the hammer throw, Neubauer was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put and discus throw at the Sun Angel Classic, recording a throw of 50’-4” (15.34m) in the shot put and a mark of 171’2” (52.17m) in the discus throw. Her mark in the discus throw is a season-best and is ranked first in the Conference and 10th in the nation this season, according to TFRRS.org.
