TUCSON -- For the second day in a row, Leif Arrhenius improved his season-best mark in the discus and won the event as BYU competed at the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday.

One day removed from winning the discus championship at the nearby Mesa Classic, Arrhenius took first in the same event with a 58.61 meter throw.

Arrhenius, a junior, also took second in the shot put. He was joined by Daniel Lawson who finished 10th in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

“We competed well,” said BYU head coach Mark Robison. “We’d like to get some better marks, but we did some good things today.”

TJ Emrich set his own new season high in the pole vault with a 5.06 meter height. Emrich was one of many Cougars to bump up their marks at the Classic.

In the 400 meters, Kevin Biesinger, Steven Hart and Ryan Waite all set new highs to help advance up the Mountain West Conference descending order list. James Derek McCallister also finished within the pack of BYU runners.

Oliver Whaley finished fifth with a new high of 57.78 meters in the hammer, the same place Trevor Heinertook in the high jump.

Bryan Payne, Chris Little, Emrich and Aaron Powell combined to give BYU a new best time in the 4x100 relay, going 41.59.

James Heiner set a season-high mark of 1:52.60 in the 800 meters, while Lance Walker improved his time in the 400-meter hurdles with his highest mark of the season, besting a time Walker set on Friday.

BYU also had two placements in the top ten of the long jump, with Powell and Kyle Mills finishing third and eighth, respectively.
