MESA -- High jumper Trevor Heiner and thrower Leif Arrhenius both improved their Mountain West Conference first place marks as BYU competed at Mesa Community College on Friday.

Heiner, the defending MWC indoor high jump champion, took first place at the Mesa meet, jumping a height of 2.10 meters, besting his previous high mark of 2.05 meters. Heiner leads the conference outdoor standings by almost four inches.

Also competing in the field events was Leif Arrhenius whose throw of 57.88 meters in the discus competition strengthened his already top MWC mark in the event which the junior leads by more than 11 feet.

Daniel Lawson finished second and Colby Barber had a season-best throw of 15.93 meters in the shot put.

Derek McCallister was the only Cougar to win his event in the track events, claiming a top time of 48.71 in the 400-meter run. Two other BYU runners, Steven Hart and Kevin Biesinger, finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the same event.

BYU had five runners in the top 12 of the 400-meter hurdles, led by Bryan Payne's second-place finish of 52.14. Kevin Ahlstrom and Lance Walker followed closely at third and fifth, respectively, while Rob Skidmore took ninth and Sean Adams came in at 12th.

Walker also finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.87, giving the senior two season-best times both hurdle events. TJ Emrich also took sixth, coming in at 15.03.

In the long jump, Kyle Mills jumped 6.62 meters and was joined by Jonathan Ferguson, who leaped 6.28 meters.

The Cougars continue competition in Arizona at the Sun Angel Classic in Tucson on Saturday.
