Cougars in Second After Day Two

LARAMIE -- At the close of the second day of the Mountain West Conference Championships, the Cougars currently stand in second place after finishing the decathlon Thursday.

“Our athletes performed well, but we just were unable to land the spots we wanted for this event,” said BYU men’s track and field head coach Mark Robison. “I think they performed well and had good competition, now we need to get out here tomorrow and keep working hard.”

Going into day two in the decathlon, sophomore Meelis Kosk and freshman Brett Birkeland sat in second and third place. Birkeland was able to maintain his position in third, while Kosk dropped to fifth ultimately.

Finishing up with 6,456 points, Birkeland concluded the day with 15.76 in the 110 meter hurdles, 32.80 meters in the discus throw, 4.05 meters in the pole vault and a final distance of 42.24 in the javelin throw.

Coming in at fifth, Kosk led the discus throw with a distance of 46.21 meters, 14.82 in the 110 meter hurdles and a distance of 34.76 meters in the javelin.

Trailing Air Force by eight points, the men’s team currently sits in second place with 10 points. Wyoming is in third with five points while New Mexico sits in fourth with three points.

The Cougars will continue the MWC Championship events Friday in hopes of bringing home their tenth consecutive MWC Championship title. Events begin Friday at 11 a.m. MT with the women’s hammer throw.
