Andam Leads Cougars at Drake Relays

DES MOINES -- Kenneth Andam led BYU's track and field team at the Drake Relays, winning the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 21.10 seconds. Andam came out on top of a talented field, including Ja'Warren Hooker of Washington, who came in second with a time of 21.11. Andam also anchored the men's 4 x100 meter team, which finished second in the event with a time of 40.35 seconds.

Jeana Bingham ended up in a three-way tie for first in the women's high jump, clearing a height of 5'10.75". Also performing well for the women was Kirsten Bolm, who finished second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.33 seconds, a provisional qualification for the NCAA championships. The only other top five finisher for the women was Becky Beachler, who finished fifth in the shot put with a put of 49'04.50". The other top five finisher for the men's team at Drake was Jeff Hopkinson, who finished fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.24 minutes.

Strong winds kept the team from meeting their expectations in several events.

"Our overall performance at the meet was a bit disappointing," Coach Robison said, "but some performances went very well. Now we're going to come home and prepare for an excellent showing when we host the Robison Invitational.

BYU also sent several athletes to the ISU Springfest in Pocatello, Idaho. Top finishers at ISU were Daymon Visser who won the men's 110 meter hurdles in 14.70 seconds and took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.73. Gabe Casdorph won the men's high jump by clearing a height of 6'06.00". Nate Harrison took second in the men's 800 meter dash with a time of 1:51.68.

Next week, the Cougars will stay home to compete in the Robison Invitational.
