Hughes and Arrhenius Earn Conference Honors
PROVO, Utah (May 13, 2002) After an impressive jump that moved her into a tie with Auburn's Elva Goulbourne for the top mark in the nation at 21-7 1/2 (6.59m), Nikki Hughes was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Hughes, a senior from Mesquite, Nev., set a new conference record with her jump, breaking former Cougar Kirsten Bolm's mark of 21-6 set in April 2000. The mark, a lifetime best for Hughes, gave her the long jump title at the Utah Collegiate Championships.
Daniel Arrhenius made it a clean sweep for the Cougars, winning the MWC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors. Arrhenius won the discus at the Utah Collegiate Challenge with a throw of 177-7 (54.13m), the top throw in the conference this year which moves him into fifth on the league's all-time list in the discus.
