Taylor ties 400-meter school record in Texas, Jackson now No. 3 all-time
LUBBOCK, Texas – BYU men’s track and field competed at Texas Tech’s Scott Jarvis Open on Friday, with Josh Taylor tying the 400-meter school record at 46.25 and Trey Jackson jumping to No. 3 all-time in the same event with a 46.36 finish.
Taylor’s historic run became the second time this season he matched a former Cougar’s top-three mark as he tied for second all-time at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 28. The sophomore from Richfield, Utah is now locked with Cade Lindahl (2012) for the school record.
Danny Bryant registered an event win and personal best among 14 competing athletes in the weight throw with a 18.44m/60-6 mark. In all, the Cougars racked in six personal-bests and two new top-10 marks.
“The 400 group ran really well today,” BYU sprints, hurdles and relays coach Kyle Grossarth said. “We had PR’s by Spencer Carlile and Eli Hazlett and then great efforts by Josh to tie for No. 1 and Trey becoming an outright top three performer all-time at BYU.”
Among the seven BYU athletes in the 400m, four Cougars took home a victory in their respective heats – Taylor, Jackson, Hazlett and Carlile. Hazlett bested his last PR set two weeks ago in Arkansas by 0.14 seconds to cross the line at 47.29. The finish put the sophomore just 0.8 seconds away from a top-10 program mark. Carlile posted a 48.07 time to surpass his previous PR set in Lubbock a year ago.
“The entire sprints group has really been putting in the work since we started back in the fall and they are seeing the results from that,” said Grossarth. “I’m excited to see what we can put together tomorrow after a great day.”
The Cougars will resume competition at the Scott Jarvis Open at 11:25 a.m. CST Saturday and will also have several distance athletes at Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Events in Boston will begin at 9:00 a.m. EST with the men’s 5000-meter.
