Eyestone Named MPSF Men's Coach of the Year

PROVO, Utah — The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation named BYU head coach, Ed Eyestone, the 2020 MPSF Indoor Track and Field Men’s Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

This marks the second season in a row that Eyestone has been awarded conference coach of the year honors.

He led the Cougar men to their second-straight MPSF Championship, backed by four individual titles and four top-three placements. 

Brandon Garnica won the 5,000m (13:52.93), Talem Franco took first in the 800m (personal-best 1:49.89), Rickey Fantroy Jr. won the triple jump (15.50m), and Michael Bluth won the 400m (46.67). 

Matt Owens took third-place in the mile (4:01.42), as did pole vaulter Zach McWhorter (5.32m/17’-5.50”) as well as the DMR (Franco, Blake Ellis, Garrett Marsing, Jacob Heslington) and 4x400m relay (Bluth, Cortez Ruiz, Landon Maxfield, Ransom Allphin). 

During his tenure with BYU track and field as an assistant and now head coach, Eyestone has coached 64 All-Americans in distance events (individual and relay).

This is Eyestone’s second career MPSF Coaching honor, repeating from 2019. Prior to taking over the program, Eyestone coached the 2011 Indoor NCAA Champion DMR as well as the individual mile champion in Miles Batty, before earning the 2012 Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year award.
