ATLANTA – Competing in the final meet before the NCAA West Regional, BYU track and field turned in a strong performance on the first day at the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday at George C. Griffin Track.

“Several of our athletes performed well today,” BYU assistant track and field coach Kyle Grossarth said. “Our throwers looked really good but the highlight of the night was Travis Fuller winning the steeplechase. He ran a great race that qualifies him for regionals.”

Fuller entered the meet with a season-best time of 9:04.89, 53rd in the West and just shy of qualifying for the West Regional. He won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Georgia Tech Invitational with a career-best time of 8:55.91. Fuller’s new time places him among the top 30 in the West and qualifies him for regionals.

Long jumper Alex Ashworth also set a personal record. The freshman turned in a mark of 7.25 meters (23-09.00), surpassing his former best jump of 7.14 meters.

Sophomore Zachary Stetler took third in the shot put, tossing the implement 17.49 meters (57-04.75). Fellow thrower, senior Keith Keller, took fifth in the javelin with a throw that measured 62.77 meters (205-11).

Women’s throwers Deezbaa Whaley and Cherilyn Bunker also fared well in the hammer throw and the javelin. Whaley, a senior, took fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.80 meters (186-04). Bunker, a freshman, took sixth in the javelin with a mark of 40.49 meters (132-10).

BYU will be back in action tomorrow at the Georgia Tech Invitational as more athletes will seek to qualify for the NCAA West Regional.
