PROVO, Utah - The No. 19 BYU men’s track and field team heads to Austin, Texas, this weekend to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Round for bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. “Qualifying this many athletes shows that our team has tremendous depth,” head coach Mark Robison said. “Once you get to this meet, everyone has a shot at moving on. The more you qualify here, the more you will likely have at nationals.”

The top 12 athletes in each event move on to the NCAA Championships, held June 6 to 9 in Eugene, Ore. The Cougars have five athletes ranked in the top 12 of their respective events; Ryan Waite in the 800-meter run, Steve Flint in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Victor Weirich in the pole vault, Tylor Thatcher in the 10,000-meter run and Jared Ward in both the 10,000 and 5,000-meter runs. Waite, Weirich and Ward have all qualified in previous seasons for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Competition begins Thursday, May 23, with freshman John Glazier leading things off for the Cougars in the long jump.
