Solid performances by Cougars at Air Force Invitational

PROVO, Utah -- In the second day of competition at the Air Force Invitational, Chase Dalton pulled ahead of Colorado State’s Justin Green by four points for a second-place finish in the heptathlon for the BYU men's track and field team on Friday.

Dalton finished with 5,090 points while fellow Cougar Isaac Robison scored a personal record of 4,735, good for a sixth-place finish. Complete heptathlon results can be found here.

“It was definitely our best heptathlon of the season,” head coach Mark Robison said. “Overall I think we competed very well today. There is still room to improve, but I’m happy with our performance.”

On the track at the Air Force Invitational, No. 17 BYU had four top-three finishes with six athletes qualifying for Saturday’s finals.

In the 60-meter dash, the Cougars had three athletes qualify for Saturday’s semifinal races. Fan Fan Charles, Jason Hinds and Benjamin Meyer finished with respective times of 7.00, 7.04 and 7.14 and will compete tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. MT in the 60 meters semifinal heats. Hinds also qualified for the 200-meter dash finals, earning a sixth-place preliminary finish with a time of 22.28.

Korey Smith took first in the 400-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 49.57. Smith will compete in the finals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MT In the 60-meter hurdles, Bejon Bryant qualified for the semifinal round with a time of 8.46.

The Cougars had two top-three finishes in the men’s unseeded pole vault. Jameson Shirley took first place, with a high mark of 15-07.00 while Kyle Brown took third place with a height of 15-01.00. Braydon Bringhurst and Victor Weirich will compete for the Cougars in the men’s seeded pole vault on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MT. With a mark of 23-04.00, John Glazier took second place in the men’s long jump.

While most of the team was competing in Colorado, several athletes made their way to Seattle for the University of Washington Invitational. Cade Lindahl was the only Cougar to compete on Friday, taking ninth place in the 200 meters with a time of 22.23.
