STOCKTON, Calif. — Rhett Rasmussen fired a 65 (-7) Tuesday to finish the second round of the Pacific Invitational tied for second and helped put BYU in second place overall as a team.

“Rhett kept us in the game with a great round today,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “The rest of the guys had solid days as well. It was a nice round for us when we needed it to get back in the game.”

Rasmussen carded seven birdies and an eagle during Tuesday’s second round to lead the Cougars. His 65 was the lowest second-round score among the 96 golfers at the tournament and put him within three strokes of current-leader Sean Yu of San Jose State.

All five of BYU’s golfers on the scoring roster shot under-par Tuesday to secure the lowest single-round team score at the tournament thus far at 276 (-12). The Cougars, who came into the day tied for seventh as a team, head into tomorrow’s final round just four strokes behind current-leader San Jose State.

Peter Kuest posted a birdie and an eagle on the day on his way to carding a second-round 70 (-2). He currently sits tied for ninth place individually. Cole Ponich is tied for 23rd after shooting a one-under 71 Tuesday, followed by Carson Lundell, who is tied for 31st after posting a two-under 70. Kelton Hirsch shot a 71 (+1) to finish the day tied for 66th. Brock Stanger, competing as an individual, shot a 69 (-2) Tuesday.

WCC foes Santa Clara and Pacific are currently in sixth and 16th places, respectively. Play will conclude after tomorrow’s third and final round. Live stats and the leaderboard are available at GolfStat.com.
