Rose earns his 200th win in 74-57 defeat of San Diego

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball coach Dave Rose earned his 200th career win as BYU defeated San Diego 74-57 in the Marriot Center on Saturday.

“There are so many people responsible for the wins," Rose said. "I think it’s interesting that one guy gets all the credit for that because I’ve had so many great coaches and the players have been terrific and committed. I care way more about the players who have been here, the teams and the chemistry than about the wins.”

Rose's career record is now 200-59. His .772 career winning percentage is currently fourth among active NCAA Division I coaches.

"After the game today we celebrated a little bit in the locker room," said senior Brandon Davies. "It’s a big deal for coach [200 career wins] and we’re all proud of him.”

With the win, Rose joined Stan Watts as the only other coach in BYU men’s basketball history to compile 200-career victories. BYU outshot San Diego (11-9, 4-1 WCC) 45.2% to 36.7% from the field in the win and improves its record to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in the West Coast Conference.

“I’m really happy for our players," Rose said. "It was a hard fought game. We were good from the start and we had to overcome quite a few challenges: we had foul trouble and we didn’t shoot the ball particularly well from the perimeter. But I thought we guarded well, I thought we rebounded well and I thought we got a lot of help from a lot of different guys.”

Tyler Haws led all scorers with 25 points and was a perfect 9 of 9 from the free-throw line. Brandon Davies sunk 17 points for the Cougars along with seven rebounds and two steals. Matt Carlino and Brock Zylstra also finished in double-digits with 11 and 10, respectively, and Nate Austin had a game-high nine rebounds.

To start the game, San Diego knocked down a 3-point shot to get on the board early. The Toreros hit their second 3-pointer at 18:22 and then sunk two shots at the charity stripe to grab a five-point lead (8-3) over BYU.

With 15 minutes remaining in the half, Josh Sharp laid the ball in to grab BYU’s first lead at 11-10 and prompt a 6-2 run for the Cougars.

Anson Winder was strong off the bench and hit BYU’s first 3-pointer of the night for a 20-12 lead at the 11-minute mark. A minute later, Davies sunk his eighth point to give BYU the 22-14 lead and solidify a 17-4 run for the Cougars.

At the 10-minute mark, Winder drove to the basket and earned himself a 3-point play to put the Cougars up by their first double-digit lead of the night at 27-15. BYU continued to add to its lead during the next five minutes and outscored San Diego 12-5 in the process.

At 4:38, BYU grabbed two offensive rebounds on one possession and San Diego’s frustration led to a technical foul. Haws hit both technical foul shots and then hit another two free throws in response to a San Diego personal foul to give BYU the 39-20 lead with only four minutes remaining in the first.

San Diego ended its three-minute scoring draught at 2:23 with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the score to 39-26. San Diego’s Johnny Dee hit another 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 1:33 left to give his team a 9-2 run heading into the one-minute mark.

However, San Diego’s coach was called for the team’s second technical foul on BYU’s next possession and Haws took advantage to put BYU up 43-29. Haws scored the last 13 points of the half for BYU and finished the half with 15 points to lead all scorers.

BYU headed into the locker room at halftime sporting a 43-31 lead over San Diego.

The Toreros quickly cut BYU’s lead to nine a minute into the second half, but Davies answered to put the Cougars back up by 11. Both teams continued to exchange points until Zylstra found Haws on a fast break to put BYU back up by 13 at 49-36 at the 17:20 mark.

A Carlino 3-pointer and a Haws jumper gave BYU a 54-38 lead heading into the first timeout of the second half. At the 11:16 mark, Craig Cusick hit his first shot of the night to extend BYU to a 58-42 lead.

Zylstra hit a 3-pointer with 9:32 left to join Davies and Haws in double-digit scoring for the Cougars.

BYU maintained a 15-point lead deep into the second half and forced San Diego to call a timeout with 5:14 remaining after Carlino knocked down a jumper to put BYU up 67-50. With 3:26 remaining, Carlino grabbed a 19-point lead for BYU after stealing the ball and taking it in for the easy layup. The shot also gave Carlino his sixth-straight game scoring in double digits with 11 on the night.   

In the end, BYU took the 74-57 win to hand San Diego its first conference loss of the season.
