Game Notes from BYU vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State

PROVO, Utah - Led by senior Brandon Davies, the BYU men's basketball team rolled over Southeastern Oklahoma State, 103-57, in an exhibition game Friday at the Marriott Center.

The 103-point BYU effort is just the second 100+ performance in an exhibition game by the Cougars in the last seven season.

"The first 10 minutes of that game seemed quite a bit different from the previous games we’ve played in the Marriott Center (due to the recent upgrades)," said BYU head coach Dave Rose. "By the end of the game it felt really good though. I’m excited for our guys, I’m excited for the season and look forward to a lot of hopefully successful nights here in the Marriott Center.”

Video Interviews and Highlights

Davies led all scorers with 25 points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Senior Brock Zylstra contributed 17 points and pulled down six rebounds while sophomore Tyler Haws knocked in 15 points and dished out four assists.

Junior transfer Raul Delgado led the 3-point attack with three of BYU's 14 baskets beyond the arc for nine total points on the night while Matt Carlino dished out a game-high eight assists. The Cougars shot .559 from the field and .440 from three. Davies scored the first basket of the night on a dunk that brought the Marriott Center fans to their feet. Davies would continue to control the court in the first half, finishing with 20 points.

After a close contest early, a Davies jumper sparked a 23-4 run that put the Cougars on top 30-10 with nine minutes remaining in the first half.

The beginning of the run featured shots from beyond the arc by sophomore Nate Austin, Carlino, Davies and Zylstra. Senior Craig Cusick also contributed to BYU’s lead after stealing the ball off an inbounds play for a breakaway layup.

Davies posterized the Storm with his second crowd-pleasing dunk of the half to propel the Cougars to a 48-21 lead. A Cory Calvert steal led to a breakaway layup for the largest BYU lead of the half, 29, with 1:04 left in the half.

Southeastern Oklahoma State capped off the half with back-to-back baskets to enter the break behind 50-25.

BYU started the second half quickly with Sharp and Haws hitting two driving baskets. The Cougars had a 6-0 run and an 11-0 run interrupted by a Storm basket midway through the second half. Davies got the team rolling before Carlino caught Zylstra from across the court for an easy three to go up 71-34.

Calvert and the Storm exchanged three pointers to move the score to 98-53 before Zylstra tipped in the ball in to reach the 100-point mark for the Cougars with 1:17 remaining. Delgado quickly added to the score with a three.

Southeastern Oklahoma State scored a basket to finalize the final score in BYU’s favor, 103-57.

The Cougars next face Findlay on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. MDT in the Marriott Center for BYU's second and final exhibition game. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and online at byutvsports.com/gameday.
