PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball coach Dave Rose announced today that Brandon Davies, Tyler Haws and Brock Zylstra have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season.

"Brandon, Brock and Tyler will provide great leadership for our team,” Rose said. “They lead by example and push the rest of the guys to be better on and off the court. Their work ethic and example will be a motivating force to help us achieve the goals we've set as a team."

Davies, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, started all 35 games last season and averaged 15.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks. He elevated his play during the conference season as he averaged 18.0 points and 8.1 boards and shot .539 from the field. The league’s coaches named him to the All-West Coast Conference squad and he also earned all-district honors.

Zylstra, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, was a team captain in 2011-12 when he averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 boards and hit a team-best 50 3-pointers. He played the third-most minutes on the team — an increase of more than 20 minutes per game from the previous season — and started 28 games. Zylstra also emerged as the team’s most versatile player as he saw action at every position but center.

Haws, a 6-foot-5 sophomore guard, returns to BYU after serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines. As a freshman in 2009-10, he earned third-team All-Mountain West Conference honors while averaging 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting .498 from the field, .368 from three and .917 from the free throw line.

Fans will have a chance to see 2012-13 Cougars for the first time tonight in the annual Papa John’s Cougar Tipoff. BYU will play its first exhibition on Friday, Oct. 26, at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center. The Tipoff will be broadcast live on BYUtvsports.com and the Southeastern Oklahoma State game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and BYUtvsports.com.
