Rose announces 2012-13 nonconference schedule
PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball coach Dave Rose announced the Cougars’ nonconference schedule for the 2012-13 season today.
The nonconference schedule is highlighted by the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., eight home games, two contests at EnergySolutions Arena, potentially five games against teams that played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and three games with in-state foes.
"We have a nice balance of home, road and neutral games in our nonconference schedule that will prepare us for conference play and the postseason," Rose said. "We have two in-state games at home, we have two quality opponents for the EnergySolutions games and the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic will be a great experience for our team. Our players and coaching staff are really looking forward to the upcoming season."
The 2012-13 season begins with two home games for Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against Tennessee State (Nov. 9) and Georgia State (No. 13). From there BYU will head to Brooklyn and play in the Classic semifinals with Florida State, Notre Dame and Saint Joseph’s on Nov. 16 and 17. Notre Dame and Florida State both played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament while Saint Joseph’s played in the NIT. Tournament pairings will be announced at a later date.
BYU will closeout November with home games against UT San Antonio (Nov. 21) and Cal State Northridge (Nov. 24) and a matchup with Montana at EnergySolutions Arena on Nov. 28.
December’s home schedule includes Utah State (Dec. 5) and Utah (Dec. 8) in the same week, Eastern New Mexico (Dec. 18) and Northern Arizona (Dec. 27). The Cougars will play their second EnergySolutions Arena game on Dec. 29 against Virginia Tech.
BYU will challenge itself with three road games in December at Iowa State (Dec. 1), Weber State (Dec. 15) and Baylor (Dec. 21). Iowa State and Baylor tied for third in the Big 12 and both advanced in the NCAA Tournament. Weber State won 25 gams in 2011-12 and played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
The preseason starts on Oct. 24 with the Cougar Tipoff and includes home exhibitions with Southeastern Oklahoma State (Oct. 26) and Findlay (Nov. 3).
The West Coast Conference schedule will be announced in August. All game times and broadcast plans will be announced at a later date.
