Rose Announces Two Signees

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s basketball coach Dave Rose announced today that prep guards Cory Calvert and Jordan Chatman have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Cougars. Rose also announced Tyler Haws will return to BYU in April after the completion of his two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints to the Philippines.

“We're very excited about the addition of these two young men to our program,” Rose said. “Cory and Jordan are not only great players, but great students and will be excellent representatives for the university. We're also looking forward to the return of Tyler Haws and for him to continue the success he established as a freshman.”

Haws, who played as a freshman for the Cougars in 2009-10, will be a sophomore for the 2012-13 season. Calvert and Chatman plan to serve missions prior to enrolling at BYU and will play their first season for the Cougars in 2014-15.

Calvert, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, demonstrated his versatility as a junior at Chaparral High School in Parker, Colo., last season. Averaging 15.8 points, 4.8 boards and 3.9 assists, Calvert led Chaparral to a 15-11 record, including 8-3 in league play. He posted season highs of 30 points, nine boards, nine assists and four steals. ESPNHS named Chatman to its preseason All-State Third Team.

Chatman, the son of BYU great Jeff Chatman, is a 6-foot-4 guard from Union High School in Vancouver, Wash. Last season he averaged 20 points per game while helping Union to the regional playoffs. He earned All-Greater St. Helens League honors and enters this season as the No. 2 senior in the state of Washington. ESPNHS named Calvert to its preseason All-State Second Team.

Haws was a two-time Deseret News Mr. Basketball at Lone Peak before helping BYU to a 30-6 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10. As a freshman, Haws earned All-MWC Third Team honors while averaging 11.3 points and 4.2 boards while shooting a BYU record .917 (fifth all-time in NCAA history) from the free throw line. Haws also set a BYU record with 48-consecutive free throw attempts without a miss, a record he will try to add to when he returns to BYU.

Cory Calvert

• Named to the 2011-12 ESPNHS preseason All-State Third Team for Colorado
• Averaged 15.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals as a junior
• Helped Chaparral to a 15-11 record (8-3 in league play) as a junior
• As a junior had season highs of 30 points, 9 assists, 9 rebounds and 4 steals
• Averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals as a sophomore
• Helped Chaparral to a 19-5 record (8-3 in league play) as a sophomore
• Posted season highs of 23 points, 8 assists, 11 rebounds and 3 steals as a sophomore
• Plays for the Colorado Hawks AAU team
• Also recruited by Colorado State, Denver, San Francisco, Utah and Utah State
• Plans to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following high school

Jordan Chatman
6-4, 190, Guard
Vancouver, Wash. / Union High School

• Named to the 2011-12 ESPNHS preseason All-State Second Team for Washington
• Earned All-Greater St. Helens League honors
• Averaged 20 points per game as a junior
• As a junior, helped lead Union to the regional playoffs
• Ranked No. 2 in his class in the state of Washington
• Will complete his associates degree in March
• Plays for the Seattle Rotary AAU team
• Father Jeff Chatman was an honorable mention All-American and is seventh all-time in scoring at BYU with 1,824 career points
• Also recruited by Utah, Utah State, Washington State, Stanford, Portland and Boston College
• Plans to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following high school

Tyler Haws
6-5, 200, Guard
Alpine, Utah / Lone Peak HS

• Named to All-MWC Third Team and Academic All-MWC
• Named Male Rookie of the Year at the Y Awards
• Named team's Most Inspirational Player
• Averaged 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds and added 26 steals and 54 assists
• Shot .498 from the field, .368 from three and .917 from the free throw line — a school record
• Scored in double figures 21 times and had 20-plus points 4 times
• Posted 2 double-doubles
• Led the team in scoring 5 times, rebounds 8 times and assists 3 times
• All-time leading scorer at Lone Peak with 1,772 points
• Named Deseret News Mr. Basketball as a junior and senior
• Led Lone Peak to state titles as a sophomore and junior and a second-place finish as a senior
• Currently serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines
