NEW ORLEANS -- The winningest season in BYU basketball history came to an end Thursday as the No. 3-seed Cougars fell to No. 2-seed Florida 83-74 in a Sweet 16 overtime thriller in the New Orleans Arena.

A missed Florida jumper as time expired in the second half preserved a 68-68 score and sent the Cougars and the Gators into overtime for the second-straight year.

In the extra period, the Gators jumped out to a four-point, 72-68 lead and would extend that lead by sinking 2-of-3 three pointers.

For the 24th time of his BYU career, the nation’s leading scorer Jimmer Fredette scored more than 30 points, totaling 32 while adding five assists, two rebounds and one steal. In his final game as a Cougar, Jackson Emery scored nine points on 3-of-8 shooting, with three rebounds and two steals. Freshman Kyle Collinsworth led the Cougars with a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with five points, one assist and one steal.

Scoring started early for both teams with the Gators taking an early 14-8 lead on 6-of-7 shooting in the first four minutes. Emery led the Cougars with six points off of two treys in the early going.

After the Gators extended their lead to nine at 17-8, The Cougars went on a 8-3 run to pull within four at 20-16 when Logan Magnusson converted a three-point play at the 12:25 mark.

In the first half, BYU forced Florida to turn the ball over 10 times, making good on those turnovers by turning them into eight points.

The Cougars took their first lead of the game at the 2:53 mark after a Fredette layup made the score 32-30. Fredette scored six points in the last three minutes of the first half to help tie the score at 36 going into the break.

Fredette continued to lead BYU in the second half, scoring eight points in the first five minutes to cut into the Gators’ temporary lead and make the score 46-44.

The back-and-forth pace continued through the midway point of the second half, with the Gators leading by as much as six with 7:46 remaining.

A deep three-pointer from Fredette tied the score at 63 with 4:59 remaining. The final three minutes of regulation saw four tie scores.

The Cougars finish with a program-record 32 wins, advancing to the sweet 16 for the first time since Danny Ainge guided BYU to the Elite 8 in 1981.
