Basketball Times Names Fredette National Player of the Year

PROVO -- BYU senior guard Jimmer Fredette has been named the Basketball Times National Player of the Year. Fredette also earned All-America honors while Jackson Emery earned a spot on the All-Southwest District Team and Coach Dave Rose was named the Southwest District Coach of the Year.

Fredette is the nation’s leading scorer at 28.8 points per game and was named the MWC and USBWA District VIII Player of the Year. He has led BYU to its first Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1981 and a program-best 32-4 record. He also helped the Cougars to a share of the MWC regular season title with a 14-2 league record. Fredette has scored 30-plus points 15 times and topped 40 points six times. He set a BYU record with 52 points in the MWC Tournament against New Mexico and is the program’s career scoring leader with 2,567 points.

Emery averages 12.6 points, 3.6 boards, 2.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game. With 99 steals this season, he has set the BYU and MWC single-season steals records. He is also the BYU and MWC career steals leader with 247. The Alpine, Utah, native was named the MWC’s Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Defensive Team and the All-MWC Second Team.

Rose has led BYU to back-to-back 30-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament victories in the past two seasons. He is second all-time in BYU history in victories (159) and first in winning percentage (.783). Rose was also the MWC Co-Coach of the Year and the USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year.

The Basketball Times All-America First Team includes Fredette, Nolan Smith (Duke) Kemba Walker (Connecticut), Jared Sullinger (Ohio State) and JaJuan Johnson (Purdue).
