DENVER -- For the second-straight year, the No. 3 seeded BYU men’s basketball team advanced in the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 14 seed Wofford 74-66 Thursday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Senior guard Jimmer Fredette scored a game-high 32 points on 10-of-25 shooting, adding eight assists and five rebounds. Charles Abouo, Noah Hartsock and Logan Magnusson each joined Fredette in double figures, posting 10 points apiece, with Magnusson adding seven rebounds and Abouo and Hartsock adding five boards each.

The Cougars grabbed the early 7-6 lead on a Fredette layup in the first four minutes of play. Hartsock scored three points and added a block during that stretch. Hartsock’s block moved him into fourth place all-time at BYU with the 120th of his career.

However, the Terriers fought back and would tie the score at 17 with 8:03 remaining in the first half on the heels of a 7-0 run. The Cougars would retake the lead after finishing the first half with a 12-4 run to give BYU a 33-29 edge.

Fredette led the Cougars in the first half with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting and five assists, while Hartsock added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, with four rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Freshman Kyle Collinsworth grabbed seven rebounds in the first half, just three shy of his career high. He would set a new career high in the second half, finishing with 11 rebounds on the night.

BYU went on a 6-2 run to begin the second half and take a 39-32 lead. Fredette continued to lead the Cougars, starting the second half with eight points in the first six minutes of the second frame.

A three-pointer by Magnusson at the 7:56 mark gave the cougars a 55-47 lead and Fredette his seventh assist of the game. Magnusson scored eight of his 10 points in the second half.

Before fouling out at the 1:51 mark, Abouo scored 10 points, all in the second half, while adding five rebounds and one steal on the night.

A free throw at the 2:58 mark added to Fredette’s game-high total of 32 and gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the night, a 14-point 67-53 advantage. Fredette now has 1,002 points this season to become the first BYU player with 1,000 points in one season.

BYU takes on the winner of No. 6 St. Johns and No. 11 Gonzaga Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will be broadcast on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM. Game time and TV broadcast plans will be announced when they become available.
